Primary Health Tasmania is launching a second round of grants to improve general practice capability to recruit and retain GPs.

In 2023 we provided a first round of grants to 19 general practices in north and north west Tasmania to strengthen their capability to recruit and retain GPs. We have now received Australian Government approval to open a second round of grants to practices in southern Tasmania, as well as to practices in the rest of the state who did not participate in round one.

As the funding pool for round two is significantly smaller than the first round the approved purposes for funding use have been tightened to ensure funding can be extended to the largest number of practices possible.

General practices located in Tasmania who did not participate in round 1 of the grants program are eligible to apply for grant funding to improve an identified area of development. Funding is limited and applications will be assessed on merit.

Practices are strongly encouraged to complete the AWARE tool as part of the application. This tool can be accessed at hrplustas.com.au/aware-gp.

Online information session

An online information session will be held at 11.00am on Wednesday 21 February 2024.

    Thank you for your question about Primary Health Tasmania’s General Practice Recruitment and Retention Grants - Round 2. There was significant interest in this grant round and we are currently working through the final stage our evaluation process to determine successful applicants. We expect to notify all applicants of the outcome late April 2024/next week.

    This could be viewed as a retention issue and you may like to utilise or apply for some of this funding as a retention grant/as a one-off incentive to encourage your existing GP workforce to change their work pattern. You would need to articulate clearly in your application how your practice will benefit from what you are proposing. Primary Health Tasmania is trying to give you as much flexibility as possible to invest grant funding where it matters most to your practice.

    Absolutely, administration staff and practice management play a key supporting role to GPs and if they are working at the top end of their scope then the GPs job can become easier and hopefully provides more access to patients on the ground.

    If you do not have a process well underway then the timeframes of this grant funding process may not support what we would call/off-set a relocation grant. If you do not already have someone in the pipeline then you would not be able to invest the funding appropriately in the timeframe available. If you do have a GP that is currently in the pipeline and you might be having difficulty to getting it ‘over the bar’ then some one-off dollars as an incentive payment might help you do that and we would look at that as an assessment panel in your application.

    Preference will be given to activities which are completed by 28 June 2024. However, where the timeframe for the professional development activity exceeds this timeframe Primary Health Tasmania may consider this on a case-by-case basis (Primary Health Tasmania must ensure that it also meets its funding guidelines).

    Is the funding going to make a lasting impact on your practice as it should? This may highlight a broader sustainability issue for your practice. Primary Health Tasmania would encourage you to consider investing grant funding in getting some business sustainability advice or some professional advice rather than just dealing with the symptom in that you are needing to use locums. As soon as the funding ends this issue may continue for you therefore the grant funding would not be making a sustainable difference to your practice.

    Nurse practitioners play a key role in supporting GPs in general practices. Primary Health Tasmania would consider proposals to bolster the supporting workforce in a general practice.

    Yes, the funding can be used for this purpose. Anything that you can do to bolster the supporting workforce around a GP may increase access to that GP for practices and may improve the working environment for an existing GP so that makes it part of the retention area of the grant funding.

    In terms of this grant program we will not be assessing applications until the grant application period closes on Friday 8 March. Our aim is to assess applications and to get back to successful practices as quickly as possible.
